Lumsden & Carroll Construction, the design & build and civil engineering arm of Esh Group has been selected to undertake the next phase of development at Durham County Cricket Club’s prestigious Riverside ground.
The £1.6 million scheme involves construction of a brand new stand, an additional tier extension to the existing South East stand and improvements and additions to the overall infrastructure for future development phases. The project has received funding support from One North East and the County Durham Economic Partnership.
Sited in between the South East stand and the Media Centre the new stand will provide additional seating for over 500 together with match-day retail space and new grounds man’s facilities in the undercroft of the building. The extension to the South East stand provides an extra 1100 seats; both buildings together increasing the overall permanent seating capacity of the Riverside by over 20% to 8,500. The new capacity for major matches will now be 17,500.
Commenting on the project, David Harker, Chief Executive of Durham County Cricket Club said:
‘We’re delighted that Lumsden & Carroll Construction is building this next exciting phase of development at the Riverside. It was important to us to work in partnership with a North East business and we were very pleased to reach agreement on the contract with them.
‘The scheme is a very important element in our development strategy as we continue to expand, thereby protecting our ECB Test status.’
The project is due to be completed at the end of March in time for Durham’s first match on Sunday 19th April against Yorkshire.
John Davies, Managing Director of Lumsden & Carroll Construction, said:
‘We’re very proud to be working with Durham County Cricket Club on their expansion. The Riverside is fast becoming an iconic sporting venue.
‘We’ve got our work cut out to make sure the stands are ready for the first match in April, but we’re confident that it will be ready for use and, of course, for everyone to admire.’
